Krista and Hunter are one of my favorite couples this year. I had an awesome time with them photographing their engagement out at the oldest pecan orchard in Texas. We love going out to our client’s property for shoots, not only does it lend variety to our shots but it gives the images a personal significance. Plus the Specks have a lovely spread with great farm equipment, fun rustic barns- and I love to photography hay bales and they had plenty of them! I’m really happy with the rustic feel and the western look we were able to achieve giving the photo shoot a true Texas touch. I can’t wait to shoot their Vintage -Texas Chic wedding at Brennan Vineyards next month!

Many art forms mimic the artistic mediums that came before it. Portrait photography is a way to paint a subject with light and has always been very influenced by the previous predominant form of portrait art, painting. I know it’s very popular right now for photographers to over expose an image to get that overly bright faded look. But the resulting blown highlights and loss of shadow in a lot of images I see make me long for the drama and visual texture brought by the rich shadows of an old masters painting.
In my own personal work I decided to explore the quiet, low key portrait. I wanted to produce a Vermeer-eque or Rembrandt-inspired portrait that would exhibit a quiet strength and draw the viewer in through subtle texture and the play of light and shadow. With my ever faithful model Leslie (my incredibly trusting and patient sister) and a few You Tube video on scarf tying I produced the following image. I am quite happy with the results and after entering it in the Brownwood Reunion Photo Contest, won first place in the Professional Division.

A few weeks ago I headed downtown to Victory Gymnastics to photography their staff. They were looking for headshots to place on the new website they are working on. I used one of the great exposed brick walls in the gym as background to add some interesting caracter and texture to the images, here are the results.

This is sweet little Zoe – and everyone who has met her says she is hands down the best baby they have ever been around! She was that way as a newborn too (See the session here) Zoe brought her sock monkey hat again, which I was super excited about. She’s just the cutest sock monkey baby ever! Here are a few of my faves…
